Invented by Herr Joseph Franz von Liebniz in 1544, chocolate covered pretzels have become one of the most popular forms of edible confections in the world. The story, as it has been documented, is that Franz Liebniz, who owned  a pretzel bakery , lived next door to a splendid and outlandish chocolatier in Hamburg, Germany   The two got together and formed one of the best tasting and most beloved chocolate and salty flavor sensations ever, the chocolate covered pretzels industry was born.

Strip of Dough Tasted Around the World

Although difficult to pin down, the history of chocolate covered pretzels can be traced back to the monasteries of northern Italy and southern France in 650 AD. The original version of a pretzel was actually a strip of dough that was given to children for helping them in memorizing certain stories of the Holy Bible. The name of this wondrous strip of dough in Latin was ‘pretiola’. The ‘‘pretiola’’ quickly started to gain popularity and a few decades later had spread all way to Western Europe and as far as Germany and the UK. While in Germany the evolution of the pretzel name changed from pretiola to bretzel. As things have a way of changing to match the locality, so did the two names for the same twisted-dough concoction, and the name ‘pretzel’ was settle upon after a minor squabbling.

Chocolate Covered Pretzels Have Become More Art Form

In the last couple of decades the western part of the world has started to really take a favor to chocolate covered pretzels and is now consuming them by the millions of pounds each and every year. In the United States chocolate covered pretzels have become more of an art form than an actual industry with many tournaments and cook-offs being held in cities such as Philadelphia, Chicago and of course New York. The City of New York has laid claim to the American version of the chocolate covered pretzel and this makes great sense with the strong population of Italian’s residing in the Big Apple.

Chocolate covered pretzels, and a variety of sinful sensations such as white, dark, milk chocolate and semi sweet variations., have overtaken the street-vendor carts and delicatessens and in a huge manner! One of the most important aspects to remember when enjoying a chocolate covered pretzel is that size does matter and that normally one medium-sized pretzel covered with a layer of dark milk chocolate is enough for one individual to consume in one sitting.

For those on a diet chocolate covered pretzels may not be the ideal food item yet the chocolate content is not as bad as many individuals take it to be and when consumed in small quantities the mighty pretzel is actually very safe and non-harmful. Chocolate covered pretzels can be enjoyed in a variety of locations such as movie theaters, dance recitals, ballparks and of course the traditional down-home country kitchen. Many individual pretzel lovers like to play around with the ingredients that make chocolate slathered pretzels a big hit in the United States. There are those that like to add dates and raisins to the chocolate as it is being poured onto the hot pretzel thus making a work of art that is simply delicious.
